Transnet – Rail Corridor KZN

VR Capture’s 360º VR Training Experience for Transnet

Project Overview

In 2022, VR Capture collaborated with Henley Business School to create an immersive 360º VR training experience for Transnet, South Africa’s leading freight logistics company. The project was spearheaded by Louise Claassen of Henley Business School, who worked closely with VR Capture to bring her visionary concept to life. The objective was to provide a cutting-edge, immersive training tool that could help Transnet employees understand and improve the company’s logistical operations across the Container Corridor, a key freight network connecting Durban and Johannesburg.

Creative and Technical Approach

VR Capture leveraged the full extent of its technological expertise to deliver this project. Using 3D 8K 360º cameras and heavy-lifting drones, we captured intricate and detailed footage that gave Transnet employees an unprecedented view of their operational environment. The VR experience was designed to place users at the center of critical logistical processes, enabling them to experience both the scope of Transnet’s operations and the challenges it faces firsthand.

The script for the experience, developed in collaboration with Henley Business School, focused on a futuristic narrative, with a protagonist named Gugu Mkhize guiding users through time to witness the impact of their strategic decisions. This immersive storytelling helped bring the real-world challenges and opportunities of Transnet’s operations to life, providing staff with an engaging and memorable learning tool.

Project Execution

The project’s key scenes were designed to showcase the scale and complexity of Transnet’s operations, such as:

  • Durban Harbour: Users were introduced to the enormity of the vessels and machinery involved in container transport, offering a bird’s-eye view of ships, tugboats, and cranes in action.
  • Container Yard Operations: The training demonstrated the intricate systems at play in managing container movement, with employees learning the importance of accurate data capturing and strategic decision-making.
  • Rail Network: Participants followed the journey of goods from Durban to City Deep in Johannesburg, understanding the challenges posed by community encroachment, infrastructure issues, and security concerns.

A blend of animations, infographics, and real-time footage gave users a comprehensive understanding of the system, empowering them to think critically about solutions for improving operational efficiency, such as using smart technologies, improving maintenance schedules, and developing upskilling programs.

Impact and Client Reception

Transnet’s leadership team was thoroughly impressed with the final VR product, praising its ability to immerse users in realistic, problem-solving scenarios. The training program was seen as a revolutionary step forward in how Transnet could educate its staff on logistical challenges and strategic planning. The interactive, immersive nature of the experience offered a far more engaging approach compared to traditional training methods.

Conclusion

VR Capture is proud to have been instrumental in delivering a groundbreaking training tool that will support Transnet’s workforce for years to come. This project exemplifies our ability to combine cutting-edge VR technology with creative storytelling to produce powerful learning experiences.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Henley Business School and Transnet as they explore the future of immersive training and development.
